Marie Gervasi Obituary

Sr. Marie Elizabeth Gervasi, LSA

October 31, 1939 – March 15, 2020

Marlborough, MA

Born in Quincy, MA, to parents  Frederick Gervasi and Donandrea MacKinnon,  Sr. Marie entered the Little Sisters of the Assumption in 1957 in Haverford, PA.  She made her final vows in Lynn, MA in 1966. She spent the majority of  her 63 years in religious life serving in Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Sr. Marie had a quiet way of spreading God’s unconditional love to those who crossed her path. Her kind smile , gentle ways, love, care, and  approachability drew people to her.

She was a practical woman who saw a need and responded.  She was asked with other Little Sisters to establish and serve on the first international  Peace and Justice commission for the Congregation of Little Sisters of the Assumption.  In Dorchester MA she, along with a few sisters in community, responded to the overwhelming homeless crisis by opening their home to homeless families. She  became the first director of what was to become Project Hope, the first family shelter in Boston.  She also served as Provincial Treasurer for the United States Province of Little Sisters. Upon leaving this position, Sr. Marie move to Philadelphia  and found great joy in working  with the Mom Mobile, a program for expectant mothers and their children.  She loved music and sang in the choir of St. Charles Borromeo Church in South Philadelphia.  One of her greatest joys was to celebrate her jubilee at St. Charles Borromeo among the people she loved and shared life with each day.

The middle child of 9 siblings, Sr. Marie is survived by Anthony Gervasi ( Karen) of Middletown, DL, Frederick A. Gervasi (Peggy) of Silver Springs, MD, Patricia Taylor currently of Hudson, NH, formerly of Burlington, MA, Sister in law Madalyn Gervasi of Weymouth, MA and Brother in Law Alton Morisi of FL and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She is pre deceased by Frederick J Gervasi, Jr, Margaret Morisi, Roger William Gervasi and spouse Shirley of Weymouth, MA, Henry Gervasi, Paul Gervasi of Weymouth and nephew Michael Morisi of Hingham.
